Asma - | UAE

Sunday, February 11th, will mark the beginning of the eighth lunar month in numerous Arab and Islamic countries, officially initiating the observance of the holy month of Ramadan.

Significantly, on Saturday, February 10th, authorities in the UAE verified the observation of the crescent moon, which signifies the commencement of a fresh month according to the Islamic calendar.

Images taken by Abu Dhabi's Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory accompanied social media posts by the UAE's International Astronomy Center announcing the sighting of the Sha'ban crescent moon. The photos were shot on February 10th, either around 11 a.m. or later, at sunset.

Hence, February 10th signifies the culmination of the month of Rajab, while February 11th marks the beginning of Sha'ban 1 in the UAE. Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Hijri calendar, holds significance as it serves as a period of preparation for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims worldwide observe fasting from dawn until dusk.

It is anticipated that most Arab and Islamic countries will commence the observance of Sha'ban on February 11th, whereas countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are likely to commence the month on February 12th.

The duration of Islamic months varies between 29 and 30 days, contingent upon the sighting of the crescent moon. As per the lunar calendar published on the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department's (IACAD) website, Sha'ban is anticipated to span 30 days, with the holy month of Ramadan slated to commence on Tuesday, March 12th.

This announcement holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide as they prepare spiritually and physically for the month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The observance of these lunar months not only serves as a religious obligation but also fosters a sense of unity and community among believers as they embark on this shared journey of devotion and self-discipline.

The commencement of Sha'ban marks a pivotal moment in the Islamic calendar, signifying the impending arrival of Ramadan and prompting Muslims worldwide to engage in introspection, acts of charity, and increased devotion to their faith.
